...Denver funk/blues diva Hazel Miller opened Friday's show in a light rain. A wildfire of bluesy passion swathed in red velvet, Miller had the Gore-Texed multitudes swaying and shimmering under her teasing spell.

At some point the rest of the country will learn what Colorado already knows: that Hazel Miller is a coal-fired steam engine of soul who never fails to deliver the goods, and her band is tight as a timetable.

And her forthcoming album, due out in late October, just might be her ticket to national renown, judging by the samples she offered up Friday. One of the best was the slow, pulsing cocktail blues of "Missing You," penned by "Big Head" Todd Park Mohr.
